Lucie’s Review:
Irene and her aunt, Anita, are missionaries in the jungles of the Philippines, held captive in a Japanese prison camp.
Rand is a suave and smooth American, used to women falling every which way under his spell.
Do a humble missionary and an overly confident womanizer have a chance at a future together a midst the turmoil?
This book was a bit of a slow starter for me, but as I read it picked up speed and soon I didn’t want to put it down–I just had to know what would happen!
I really liked Anita, because she showed great strength and didn’t let being blind keep her down. She was like a mother to Irene, and mentored her with faith.
There was great interaction between Rand and Irene, I liked that Irene didn’t fall for him right away, and didn’t fall for his practiced charm. Rand really grew a lot over the course of the story, and the more he lost the more he found, and realized the things that were really important.
Overall this is a poignant read, set during WWII in the Santo Tomas Internment Camp. Through it all loved how it all came together, and how they fought to survive the war. A wonderful deep running novel of wartime.
About the book:Remember the Lilies (Thomas Nelson, February 2015)
Can Irene and Rand stave off starvation until the American troops bring freedom?
Interred by the Japanese, missionary Irene Reynolds comes across a mysterious note while working at the censor’s office. She memorizes the parts she must black out and delivers it to wealthy nightclub owner Rand Sterling. Before she knows what’s happening, she’s drawn into a web of secrets and danger.
Rand Sterling wants nothing more than to reopen his nightclubs once the war ends. But slimy Frank Covey wants his hand in the till—and has news that could threaten Rand’s reputation if it became public. More importantly, beautiful and intriguing Irene Reynolds cannot discover this information if he expects to persuade her to become his wife.
When Irene is attacked by a sinister Japanese guard and their secrets are exposed, they must learn the true meaning of forgiveness—if they can stave off starvation until the American troops bring freedom.

Lucie’s Review:
Growing up Finn and his grandfather shared letters, leaving them for each other in the old mason jar, words of encouragement, advice, and affirmation. When Finn left for college he fell in love with beautiful young woman with a past, named Eden. Suddenly Eden disappears from his life and Finn is left with many unanswered questions, so he goes to the mission field in Africa, and returns home to bury his grandfather still haunted by the mysterious love that still haunts him.
“A story about a girl who vanished, a former love who wrote a book about her and a reunion they never imagined.” [from the back cover of the book]
What I Loved: I loved the premise of the story, with the exchanging of the letters and the closeness between Finn and his grandfather. And how the grandfather uses his letters to encourage Finn, and share his faith with him.
What I Liked: I liked how Eden and Finn were careful too not let their relationship go “too far” physically. I did come to understand the reasons why Eden felt she had to do what she did, though it would have been nice if she had been able to tell Finn sooner so that he wouldn’t have been bitter so long
What I Disliked: I didn’t like how Eden and Finn’s relationship got physical so fast, and how often the book would described their physical intimacies during their time together. I didn’t connect to the characters and that made it a hard book to read.
Overall: This wasn’t my kind of book, and honestly not one that I could recommend. I often felt that it tried too hard to be intellectual, making it tougher to connect with the story and the characters. Personally this just wasn’t the book for me, I have read many reviews that rave about this book and others that rave about it, so I would definitely recommend looking into other reviews to get a fuller picture of if this book is a good fit for you!

Lucie’s Review:The first in a new series by Karen Witemeyer it follows three unwanted orphans who met on the orphan train, banded together and made their own family.
Zach is the oldest, he is a gruff, protector, with a heart of gold. Seth is scrawny, with asthma, who reads everything he can get his hands on. Both of them are very protective of Evie, who has face prejudice because of her different colored eyes. They find a safe place out of town where Seth is free of asthma and Evie can wander the hills with her pet pig, Hezekiah.
Logan Fowler is a man bent on revenge, he wants to ruin the man who hurt his family, but he isn’t expecting to find Evie. He tells himself that befriending her isn’t a lie, and he is intrigued by her beautiful eyes.
Will Evie and Logan find in each other More Than Meets the Eye?
Logan is an unexpected hero who bursts onto the scene–literally. He has a bent for revenge, but the more that he gets to know Evie and her family, the more he comes to realize that he needs to come clean about his reasons for coming to them. I like how he encourages Evie, and urges her to pay not attention to the ignorant townspeople who fling their painful insults. I liked the dialog between him and Evie.
Evie has a big heart, despite being hurt by people’s ignorance. She is kind, honest, and gives a first impression of naivety, but has a level of spiritual maturity that shines through. I love her pet pig, who brings a lot of humor to this riveting novel.
I liked this book from the beginning, and how you don’t only see the relationship of the main characters, but also get to know Evie’s brothers, and their new friend Christie, a deaf girl who can speak and read lips. There are great characters, humor, faith, mystery, with an action packed conclusion. I liked the theme of giving God control, and trusting in His plan and not our own. I couldn’t put it down, it was an absolute delight to read. This is one of my favorite books so far by this author!

It seems pretty non creepy mostly a social group with some secret frat rituals silly hats and a lot of philanthropy. All shriners are masons but not all masons are shriners.
Mason Shriner Masonic Symbols Masonic Freemason
The shriners are in no way a christian organization.

Are shriners part of the masons. The shriners are masons in the higher levels. It s simply an organization that requires masonic lodge membership as a prerequisite for joining. Shriners is an offshoot group of the masons.
Shriners hospitals are a philanthropic endeavor of the masons. Shriners international also commonly known as the shriners or formerly known as the ancient arabic order of the nobles of the mystic shrine aaonms anagram for a mason is a masonic society established in 1870 and is headquartered in tampa florida. As the masons note well on their official website all masons are shriners and shriners hospitals are one of their big service projects.
Freemasonry originates from ancient assyria. Freemasonry dates back hundreds of years to when stonemasons and other craftsmen gathered after work in shelter houses or lodges. They are best known for the shriners children s hospital.
The shriners is a fraternal organization that grew out of the masonic movement in the united states in the latter part of the 19th century. The ancient arabic order of the nobles of the mystic shrine abbreviated a a o n m s commonly known as the shriners is an islamic organization founded in mecca saudi arabia in 644 a d. It is an organization of freemasonry.
Shriners international is a spin off from freemasonry the oldest largest and most widely known fraternity in the world. By the family of muhammad. From the beginning the shrine was intentionally designed to be fun actually even a bit juvenile.
Members of the shriners are called mohammedans. I used to have a friend whose father was a shriner. All shriners are freemasons but not all freemasons become shriners.
The shrine isn t a masonic organization it doesn t confer any degree that continues or enlarges on the masonic degrees. There is no doubt that these hospitals work to treat the serious medical needs of children. They pose as do gooders helping children.
Shriners international describes itself as a fraternity based on fun fellowship and the masonic principles of brotherly love relief and truth. The organization is predicated on principles of philanthropy brotherly love peace and strong family values. They re a group for high level masons so you can only become a shriner if you are already a master mason.
You can read about the shriners here.
For example the number 100 indicates a shutter speed of 1 100 second. This means that you could set your shutter speed to 1 250th of a second and your image would still come out properly exposed.
Learning Exposure The Old Fashioned Way Digital Photography
The wider it gets the more light it lets in.

Understanding shutter speed and aperture for dummies. Iso aperture shutter speed a cheat sheet for beginners. The wider the aperture the shallower the depth of field and the more light that comes in. The shutter lives just in front of the imaging sensor and the shutter speed is the amount of time it stays open like 1 60 second.
The combination of shutter speed and aperture determines how much light hits the digital sensor in your camera and the iso setting determines how quickly the sensor responds to the light. This is not a rule and it will differ depending on the iso and f stop. Shutter speeds generally range from as fast as 1 4000th of a second to as long as 30 seconds.
By the end of this tutorial you should understand what these 3 components are and how they affect the final photograph. Together the aperture settings shutter speed and iso produce an exposure. Shutter speed is responsible for two particular things.
One of the three most important settings in photography is shutter speed the other two being aperture and iso. Aperture and shutter speed work together. Aperture shutter speed and iso.
In daylight shooting a 50mm lens would probably require a shutter speed of 1 60 and with a 200mm lens you would have to shoot at a 1 250 shutter speed. When the shutter speed slows to 1 second or more quote marks appear after the number 1 indicates a shutter speed of one second 4 means four seconds and so on. In the above example at aperture of f 3 5 shutter speed of 1 125th of a second and iso 200 if you were to increase the iso to 400 you would need twice less time to properly expose the image.
Changing the brightness of your photo and creating dramatic effects by either freezing action or blurring motion. The best way to understand the aperture definition is to think of it as the pupil of an eye. Shutter speed is how long your shutter remains open.
The diameter of the aperture size changes allowing more or less light onto the sensor. To select aperture and shutter speed start by pressing the shutter button halfway to kick the exposure. One of the first things you must learn as a new photographer is the relationship between iso aperture and shutter speed.
Aperture is a measure of the amount of light allowed to hit an image sensor. A simple way to illustrate how the three exposure settings work together is to think of filling a water bucket. Known as the exposure triangle this is the basis of the photography world as addition and subtraction are in the math realm.
Shutter speed is connected with the focal length of the lens.

Lucie’s Review:
Rhoda had finally found a place where she fit in, work she loved, a man who made her laugh and a business partner who worked as hard as she did. But because of a single mistake she’s lost it all. She can still work, but she cannot speak to Samuel without making her boyfriend jealous, and she will do anything to keep from ruining their unique bond as brothers.
If you’ve read the last few books in the series, you will know the characters and the situation as the story grows. Rhoda and Jacob are trying to get back what they once had together, and Samuel is working hard to save the orchard and make up for past mistakes. There are also several subplots, one of my favorites being Leah and Landon’s story as she wavers between staying or leaving the Amish. A new girl, Iva come to town because of a call from Leah, and she stays to get away from a bad past.
This book is well written and definitely kept be reading at a steady pace, and it takes a realistic look at the problems facing modern Amish communities. Definitely not a stand alone book. This book follows the troubled times that follow a mistake and how it is seldom easy or clear cut to fix when three people are involved.

My Review:
Tanwen dreams of being the royal storyteller, spinning her colorful stories and never going to bed hungry again. But her craft is a dangerous one when there are only a handful of approved stories, and anything outside of that is considered treasonous. As she continues to tell her stories and she unravels more of her mysterious past and that of the usurper, the truth becomes more and more difficult and even painful to suppress.
Will the truth cost Tanwen her life?
A fantastical new series, with strong worldbuilding, and wonderfully unique underdog heroes. A well crafted story, with a straightforward, and unflinchingly curious heroine. Tanwen says what she thinks, though she is also sensitive to others and struggles to strike a balance with one of her dearest friends.
I loved how the author used the color imagery of story spinning to bind the story together, as well as using various viewpoints to tell the story.
Overall this is an excellent start to a sure to be fantastic trilogy. I had heard rave reviews from other bookish friends so I was excited to dive into this one, and I wasn’t disappointed. It has strong themes of truth, with seedling threads of faith, as well coming of age themes. Many of the characters are very interesting, some of them we got to know better than others, but I’m excited to get to know them better and see where the story goes. The ending was satisfying, in that it gave me just enough answers, while still leaving many threads unwound to be woven in subsequent installments. Definitely recommend!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Lucie’s Review:
If you’ve read Ms. Hauck’s Once Upon a Prince, you will love this delightful short story that picks up directly after the fairy tale engagement. Susanna Truit, a true southern girl from Georgia, is about to marry King Nathaniel II of Brighton. But things are not as simple as they seem, and their trip down the aisle will be far from easy.
Even you haven’t read Once Upon a Prince it won’t be hard to find yourself caught up in the adventure, and the characters. While the backstory isn’t totally rehashed, the author makes it easy to figure out what has happened and what is going on. The plot and pace kept me reading, and fit the short story format well.
My absolute favorite part was the wedding, it was so romantic! But I’d better not tell you about that!
Overall this was a wonderful book, filled with romance, tension, and drama, and a satisfying resolution. Nathaniel was an honorable hero, and even though he was king he had his priorities in line. And Susanna’s pastor was a wise man with plenty of sage advice. I would definitely recommend this fantastic modern fairy tale!

Below is a 30 second section of a spectrogram produced in audacity using its default colour scheme. The black background is silence while the bright orange curve is the sine wave moving up in pitch. A spectrogram is a readout that shows frequency on the vertical axis time on the horizontal axis and amplitude amount of sound energy as either darkness or coloration.
The spectrogram can show sudden onset of a sound so it can often be easier to see clicks and other glitches or to line up beats in this view rather than in one of the waveform views. To select spectrogram view click on the track name or the black triangle in the track control panel which opens the track dropdown menu. Time runs from left oldest to right youngest along the horizontal axis.

Louder noise at a particular frequency at a particular time. On a spectrogram it looks a little like a cross between a fricative and a vowel. Lowest frequency content is displayed at the bottom highest frequency content is displayed at the top.
3 the other side of the source filter coin is that you can vary the pitch source. Spectrograms are basically two dimensional graphs with a third dimension represented by colors. In the spectrogram view the vertical axis displays frequency in hertz the horizontal axis represents time just like the waveform display and amplitude is represented by brightness.
