Growing Up Duggar: The Duggar Girls Share Their View of Life Inside American's Most Well-Known Super-Sized Family

My Review:

The four oldest girls from the popular reality show 19 Kids and Counting share from their hearts and talk about the 8 most important relationships in a girl’s life.

This was a quick conversational read, with great little stories and insights into their lives. Before reading this book I was only vaguely familiar with the Duggars as I don’t watch their show, (we don’t have TLC), but I’d heard many wonderful things about their family and their values. So not knowing much about the Duggars I dove right on in.

This was a fast moving read, that didn’t take much time to finish once I got started. To be honest it wasn’t quite riveting, but I did enjoy it.

It was fun reading about the Duggar’s big family and how they really used their show to share their faith, even when people on the internet and in real life are less than kind to them.

Overall, this would be a great read for Christian young women, whether they’ve seen the show or not. I found it to be very enjoyable, and who knows maybe sometime in the future I’ll catch an episode of their show 🙂

My Review:

In this book Erwin Lutzer compares post-modernity to Babylon, challenging Christians to be Daniels in a world that pushes them to compromise.

Mr. Lutzer challenges his readers to live set apart lives for God, unbending to the culture. He uses the Israelites living in Babylon as an example, how God called them to separate themselves from what the rest of the culture was doing, chasing after idols.

Mr. Lutzer explores how we got to this point in America, and how we can prepare for the future. He looks at our culture, the media, our phones and electronic devices, as well as the government and how we as Christians should respond to the political turmoil.

I really liked how he explained his position on how we as Christians should respond to controversial issues, and there was a lot of good food for thought. Mr. Lutzer has really thought through many things, and rallies Christians to respond to their calling to be lights in the darkness, set apart, and uncompromising on God’s word.

Has Anyone Ever Seen God?: 101 Questions and Answers about God, the World, and the Bible - By: Carolyn Larsen Illustrated By: Amylee Weeks
My Review:

A lovely read that concisely answers 101 common questions about God and the Bible, with a pleasing layout and bound into a gift book format.

A lovely book to share and give as a gift to a new Christian or to someone who could use some cheer and comfort. It would also be perfect for reading with young children who have many questions that can be tricky to answer.

Each question is answered in about the length of a page, so of course it is impossible for every question to be answered in absolute thoroughness, but it does provide a great start in the right direction. The book serves it’s purpose well and I was pleased with how concisely many of the questions were handled, while pointing to scripture for authority.

Overall, it was a pleasant and enjoyable read, that skillfully skims through and answers tough questions. It would make a lovely gift for someone who is a new Christian. A very well done read for its intended audience.

Live Original: How the Duck Commander Teen Keeps It Real and Stays True to Her ValuesMy Review:

An upbeat read, about living a life of faith, confidence, and optimism.

This might be weird, but I have never actually seen an episode of Duck Dynasty but I have read some other books by other members of the family and I have admired their faith and business smarts. And lately I have caught a few glimpses of Sadie’s run on Dancing with the Stars. So I was very excited to read this book.

It was an upbeat read, quick and easy, yet meaningful in its simplicity. Sadie fearlessly shares her faith and beliefs in an age where it is not always easy to voice your beliefs. She share her passion for Christ, and throughout the book you can feel the respect she has for her family.

Sadie speaks honestly from personal experience on how to deal with things like worry, determination, following your dreams, relationships, and through it all, God.

Overall, and fun read, full of encouragement. A great book to keep in mind for gifts this Christmas!

Beyond Ordinary: When a Good Marriage Just Isn't Good Enough

My Review: An honest look inside of marriage and the struggles that can tear a couple apart.

I liked the diary style with which this book was written making it easy to connect with the author and get a firm grasp on what they were feeling and going through. This book made me really think about how hard marriage is and how easy it is to drift apart, as a single gal I can’t say that totally understood what they were going through or could connect personally, so this book would probably be better for someone married or considering getting married in the near future.

But I really loved the hopeful message of this story, that even a marriage that looks like it is headed for divorce, full speed ahead, can be saved.

Both Trisha and Justin shared with brutal honesty what they were going through during their early years of marriage.

Overall, this was a good book with a great message of hope and honesty. Marriage isn’t easy, but with faith in God and a willingness to follow His plan for marriage even a marriage that seems lost can be restored.
