I like that Leo insists on following Alicia home, and after a frightening experience on the way, she invites him to stay on the ranch with her, Charlie, and her father. Leo is dedicated, determined and persistent, he knows he can’t be everywhere, but he does everything he can to protect Alicia and Charlie. I like how he got to know Charlie, and let him play with True when he was off duty.
Both Leo and Alicia have things in their past that keep them from hoping for a future chance at love, but Alicia’s father helps to set them straight. Their close quarters help Alicia and Leo get to know each other, and they talk about their shared faith, and trusting God to direct them.
This was a fast paced read, and I love every book in the series. This book had a quick hook, great interaction, and the intensity grew as the plot progressed. Fantastic read!

My Review:
I didn’t know how much I needed this sequel until I read this book. It picks up right where Waves of Mercy left off, Anna has returned to her life with her adoptive parents, and is preparing to marry William. But as the wedding approaches she begins to see how her old way of life and friends clash with her new found faith, yet she feels that she must marry William, because he holds the key to saving her family from financial ruin. But feelings for a young ministry student, Derk Vander Veen, and her current fiance’s passivity to her faith and diststain for her humble beginnings make her wonder if she is making the right choice.
Meanwhile back in Holland, Michigan, Oma Geesje agrees to take in a troubled young woman who has just arrived from the Netherlands with her stern grandfather. Derk cannot forget about Anneke, he thinks of her often and can’t seem to get her of his head.
Picking up right where Waves of Mercy left off this book tells the continuing story of Anna and Geesje. Anna goes back to Chicago, continuing to search for answers as to her parentage, trying to live her faith in her high society circle, in spite of cruel gossips. I admired Anna for her bravery to stand up for others, and her passion to do more with her life than go to teas and parties. Anna loves her parents and her newfound grandmother dearly.
Oma Geesje prays for her granddaughter unceasingly, and takes a troubled young Dutch girl under her wing. Geesje stands up for the girl, and tries to show her God’s grace, and help Cornelia reconnect with her grandfather. Geesje is a wise woman, who acknowledges her own failings, but finds hope in Christ alone. She encourages others in faith, and has a way of gently smoothing the way for things to come.
Overall, a fantastic book I enjoyed every minute of this sequel done right. I loved continuing Anna’s journey, and how she took her faith home to Chicago. This book ties up all the loose ends from Waves of Mercy, with a fantastic ending. I would definitely recommend reading this duology in order so you don’t miss out on important parts of the story. I liked the contrast of Geesje and Anna, a woman new in her faith, and a woman who has been a believer for many years, as well as how they both encourage Cornelia. A gripping read about family, faith, love, and forgiveness.

Each of the three novellas are interwoven with the story lines of the other making this book even sweeter. Because this is a novellas collection I will split my review into 3 parts, with a brief review of each story.
Perfect Secret is the first of the collection, and tells the tale of Rose Bender and her husband-to-be Luke. As the date grows closer so do Rose’s suspicions that Luke is hiding something from her.
This story was hard for me to get into, and the story was a bit choppy at times. At times I questioned the logic behind some of the character’s choices, but this is just my personal opinion. Perfect Secret the realms of doubt, and mistrust that can either hold people together or tear them apart.There are some scenes that will make you smile, right along with the characters 🙂 If you love Amish fiction you’ll enjoy this one.
Perfect Match. Naomi, who has made some good matches for others, attempts a match for a friend. But what happens when it all goes awry?
Well written with a clear, plot and characters that will endear themselves to you when you aren’t looking, Perfect Match was my favorite of the three stories, and it’s possibly because I got to see the connections being made between the two main characters, instead of it already being in place before the story began. The characters were well done, and I couldn’t help but be utterly charmed each of them. Not only did the main characters stand out , but so did some of the side characters, most especially Margaret. I couldn’t help but wish that Margaret’s story had been expanded upon 🙂
Perfect Plan. What happens to a young Amish couple when everything seems to go wrong just weeks before their big day? For Priscilla and Chester, that’s exactly what seems to happen, even to the point of them questioning whether they should even be together!
This was the story that tied them all together. Filled with humorous moments, and faith, Perfect Plan show us how, we should trust all our worries and cares to the Lord, rather than take them upon ourselves, because He alone can make things–and be–perfect. Chester and Priscilla want everything to be perfect for their wedding yet, worries and stress creep up on them at times. Filled with heartwarming moments and messages, sure to put a smile on your face 😀
Overall this is a wonderful collection for the lovers of Amish fiction, out there, and for those who just want a great read. You won’t want to miss An Amish Wedding!

It was such a thrill for me to contact and commission this artist to create a look for Goddess Tithe that is reminiscent of the original novels but has a style and drama all its own.
The boy on the front was quite a find. I hunted high and low for an image of a boy the right age, the right look, with the right expression on his face. Phatpuppy and I worked with a different model through most of the cover development stage. But then I happened upon this image, and both she and I were delighted with his blend of youth, stubbornness, and strength of character! It wasn’t difficult to switch the original boy for this young man. He simply is Munny,
and this cover is a perfect window into the world of my story.
You can’t see it here, but the wrap-around back cover for the print copy contains some of the prettiest work . . . including quite a scary sea monster! Possibly my favorite detail is the inclusion of the ghostly white flowers framing the outer edge. These are an important symbol in the story itself, and when Phatpuppy sent me the first mock-up cover with these included, I
nearly jumped out of my skin with excitement!
Illustrations: There are eight full-page illustrations in Goddess Tithe featuring various characters and events from the story. This is the first one in the book. I decided to share it with all of you since it depicts my young hero, Munny the cabin boy, under the watchful eye of his mentor, the old sailor Tu Pich. Munny is on his first voyage, and he is determined to learn all there is to know about a life at sea as quickly as possible. Thus we see him utterly intent upon the knot he is learning to tie. Tu Pich is old enough to know that no sailor will ever learn all there is to know about the sea. Thus he looks on, grave, caring, and perhaps a little sad. He might be looking upon his own younger self of many years ago, fumbling through the hundreds of difficult knots his fingers must learn to tie with unconscious ease.
I enjoyed creating all the illustrations for Goddess Tithe, but this one was my favorite. I
love the contrasts of light and dark, the contrasts of young and old . . . youthful intensity versus
the perspective of age.

Here is an excerpt from the middle of the story. In this scene, Munny has been ordered
to Captain Sunan’s cabin to clear away his breakfast . . . an unexpected task, for a lowly cabin
boy would not ordinarily dare enter his captain’s private quarters! Munny hopes to slip in and out
quietly without attracting the captain’s notice. But his hopes are dashed when Sunan addresses
him, asking how their strange, foreign stowaway is faring:
“And what do you make of him yourself?”
Munny dared glance his captain’s way and was relieved when his eyes met only a
stern and rigid back. “I’m not sure, Captain,” he said. “I think he’s afraid. But not of . . .”
“Not of the goddess?” the Captain finished for him. And with these words he turned
upon Munny, his eyes so full of secrets it was nearly overwhelming. Munny froze, his
fingers just touching but not daring to take up a small teapot of fragile work.
The Captain looked at him, studying his small frame up and down. “No,” he said, “I
believe you are right. Leonard the Clown does not fear Risafeth. I believe he is unaware
of his near peril at her will, suffering as he does under a peril nearer still.”
Munny made neither answer nor any move.
“We will bring him safely to Lunthea Maly, won’t we, Munny?” the Captain said. But
he did not speak as though he expected an answer, so again Munny offered none. “We
will bring him safely to Lunthea Maly and there let him choose his own dark future.”
“I hope—” Munny began.
But he was interrupted by a sudden commotion on deck. First a rising murmur of
voices, then many shouts, inarticulate in cacophony. But a pounding at the cabin door
accompanied Sur Agung’s voice bellowing, “Captain, you’d best come see this!”
The Captain’s eyes widened a moment and still did not break gaze with Munny’s.
“We’ll keep him safe,” he repeated. Then he turned and was gone, leaving the door
open.
Munny put down the pot he held and scurried after. The deck was alive with hands,
even those who were off watch, crawling up from the hatches and crowding the rails on
the port side. They parted way for the Captain to pass through, but when Munny tried to
follow, they closed in again, blocking him as solidly as a brick wall.
“Look! Look!” Munny heard voices crying.
“It’s a sign!”
“She’s warning us!”
“It’s a sign, I tell you!”
Fearing he knew not what, Munny ran for the center mast and climbed partway up,
using the handholds and footholds with unconscious confidence. Soon he was high
enough to see over the heads of the gathered crew, out into the blue waters of the
ocean. And he saw them.
They were water birds. Big white albatrosses, smaller seagulls, heavy cormorants,
even deep-throated pelicans and sleek, black-faced terns. These and many more,
hundreds of them, none of which should be seen this far out to sea.
They were all dead. Floating in a great mass.
Munny clung to the mast, pressing his cheek against its wood. The shouts of the
frightened sailors below faded away, drowned out by the desolation of that sight. Death,
reeking death, a sad flotilla upon the waves.
“I’ve never seen anything like that.”
Munny looked down to where Leonard clung to the mast just beneath him, staring
wide-eyed out at the waves. “How could this have happened? Were they sick? Caught
in a sudden gale? Are they tangled in fishing nets?”
There was no fear in his voice. Not like in the voices of the sailors. He did not
understand. He did not realize. It wasn’t his fault, Munny told himself.
But it was.

I’ve been a lifelong fan of Anne of Green Gables, I was six years old the first time I saw the 1985 film adaption on PBS, when I was eight my whole family listened to the audio while on a road trip, and when I was about ten I read the entire original series. So when I saw this book on my library’s list of new books, I knew I had to read it. Marilla has always been my one of my favorite characters of the series, and though L.M. Montgomery told many a story about the many other residents of Avonlea in her collected short stories, she never wrote more about Marilla’s past and younger life than what is hinted at in the original series.
Marilla is the responsible and level-headed, dutiful daughter, with a gift in the kitchen and a generous heart. She becomes fast friends with Rachel White, and catches the eye of farmer’s son, John Blythe. When tragedy befalls the Cuthbert family, Marilla must grow up fast taking on the household responsibilities, sacrificing some of her dreams, while finding purpose in serving others.
I loved this book so much more than I thought I would, it’s hard to know with prequels to such beloved favorites if the author will do justice to the people that you know and love, and all of what they became, but I feel that Ms. McCoy rises to the occasion with this memorable prequel exploring the earlier life of Marilla Cuthbert. I felt very much that this book honored the original series, staying true, yet showing a glimpse more of what Marilla, Matthew, John and Rachel were in their youths. I especially liked how Rachel was portrayed in her youth, matter-of-fact as ever, yet lighter and more carefree, a faithful friend to Marilla.
Marilla and John’s romance was handled well, and though we know how it ends, it was no less true, and shines with hope despite their obstacles, setting the stage for the future. John is a good hearted man, he is kind and selfless, smart and forthright, though mule-headed at times, just like Marilla.
Overall, if you are a fan of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables this is worth a read, I think that you will be pleasantly surprised as I was, enchanted once again by the beauty of Prince Edward Island. Marilla of Green Gables stays true to the spirit of the original, taking a deeper look at Marilla before Anne Shirley came into her and Matthew’s life. A savory delight that I enjoyed to the last, it fits well with the original series, and is a treat that you won’t want to miss!
